Diversity management is the process of creating an environment that enables all participants to fully contribute to the goals of the organization. Strategic diversity management requires an individual “to make quality decisions in the midst of differences, similarities, tensions, and complexity.” The decision-making capability relies on the individual’s ability to focus on requirements rather than personal preferences, traditions, or conveniences.
The Peer Coaching process is a strategy for developing diversity management capability. The strategy takes the learning beyond classroom training and extends it to the application of effective diversity management practices in day-to-day work tasks.
The process combines periodic meetings to apply the Strategic Diversity Management Process™ decision-making framework to real-time issues. It calls for participants to:
Meet periodically (usually monthly) to identify and work through real-time work challenges,Identify actions they can take to address these challengesTake the actions in the interim periodReport back and review the results of their effortsRepeat the process
During the meetings participants engage in reflective and challenging dialogue to:
Examine their perspectives,Examine other possible perspectives Engage in a questioning process that enables participants to gain additional insightsGenerate and select actions to take to address the challenges they face
Participants receive feedback and coaching on their efforts to apply diversity management principles and skills to address their challenges. This process is repeated for a period of time sufficient to accomplish both the work task and to develop the capability of applying the process independently – usually 4-6 sessions.
